The Dawn Staley Effect

How Dawn Staley Recruits Top Athletes To South Carolina

South Carolina is the top women’s basketball team in the nation and WHN had the opportunity to sit down with the parents of Chloe Kitts and Bree Hall for an interesting and informative interview.

They tell us:

  • What it is like to have your daughter recruited by Dawn Staley

  • Dawn’s powerful relationships with her athletes

  • How the Gamecocks lift each other up in challenging times

You don’t want to miss this great interview and we are so happy their parents could join us.

Oregon State BEATS Colorado

While many women’s basketball fans were shocked by Nebraska’s upset of Iowa — one Top 25 game went underreported. Oregon State #17 beat Colorado #4 in a tight game which led the Beavers to a 65-59 win.

If I were a coach, I’d be terrified of matching up against Oregon State during tournament / March Madness. So far the Beavers have beat Utah and Colorado — they have had tight games with USC, Stanford, and UCLA.

Talia Von Oelhoffen led with 18 points and Reagan Beers had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Nebraska’s Jaz Shelly Clarifies Face Wave

Nebraska’s win over Iowa shocked women’s basketball fans last night and created stirs on social media as fans questioned conduct from Nebraska’s Jaz Shelly and Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder.

Lisa Bluder was caught on a hot mic in an explosive rant after Iowa lost.

Social media also accused Jaz Shelley of taunting Caitlin Clark with the infamous face wave. She later took to social media last night to say that she was signaling their face guard defense… presumably to keep Caitlin Clark contained.

In a game where Caitlin Clark was 39 points away from breaking Kelsey Plum's all-time NCAA women's basketball record, she lost to Nebraska in a nail-biter. It would be her first loss to the Huskers in her Iowa career.  Nebraska guard Jaz Shelley would hit a key three-pointer with 32 seconds left to put the Huskers up one. Shelley was also crucial for the Huskers down the stretch, knocking down all of her free throws to help seal the victory. Jaz Shelley finished the game with 23 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, and knocked down five three-pointers.

Nebraska's defense was outstanding down the stretch of the game, holding Clark scoreless in the fourth quarter on 0-6 shooting. This tied her worst shooting quarter from 2022, when she shot 0-6 in the last period of an NCAA tournament second-round defeat to Creighton.Caitlin Clark's pursuit of the scoring record will continue on Thursday, February 15th, when Iowa faces Michigan, with Clark just 8 points away from making history.

Last-Tear Poa Shines For LSU In Critical Moment Against Alabama

In yesterday’s game against Alabama, junior guard Last-Tear Poa came off the bench to help lead LSU to a stunning victory. At halftime, LSU was down and struggling to get their offense and defense together. In a controversial shift, Coach Kim Mulkey chose to bench star transfer Haley Van Lith and start Poa.

The controversial move ended up being the right one as Poa performed incredibly on offense and defense for the Tigers. Poa netted a career high 11 points and helped the Tigers with 4 assists and 6 rebounds.

LSU beat Alabama 85-66!

No Cardoso. No problem, as No. 1 South Carolina defeats No. 11 UConn.

South Carolina would easily defeat UConn even without All-America candidate center Kamilla Cardoso, who was away from the squad for the second straight game while playing for the Brazil national team in Olympic qualification games. Te-Hina Paopao, the Gamecocks' senior guard, had a game-high 21 points on 5-7 shooting from three.

“You've just got to stay locked in,” Paopao said. “They went in.”

Ashlyn Watkins finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Chloe Kitts added 14 points and four rebounds, while Raven Johnson had a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

UConn's Paige Bueckers and Aliyah Edwards both finished with 20 points. Edwards was the only player to shoot above 50% from the field, finishing the game 8-13 while also grabbing 12 rebounds. Bueckers struggled from the floor, going 8-20 from the field and 2-6 from three.

“We just wanted to make it hard for her,” Staley said of Bueckers. “She definitely felt our presence on her.”

“They're a much different team than some of the ones we've faced,” Auriemma said. “They're style of play is different. They're able to keep the pressure on.”
